Here’s to the Older Americans in my LIfe….

May is Older Americans Month.  Since 1963 when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May to be “Senior Citizens Month”, May has been the month in which communities across the nation acknowledge the important contributions older Americans have made and continue to make to our country.  In 1980 President Jimmy Carter changed the designation to “Older Americans Month” and every year since then U. S. Administration on Aging has encouraged individuals and organizations that provide services, support and resources to older adults, to recognize the achievements of local elders. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Unleash the Power of Age!”  It is a fitting call to action that emphasizes the influential role of older members of our society.  While it is always important to recognize the valuable experiences and collective wisdom of older Americans, May provides us with the opportunity to publicly celebrate the power of age and to show our appreciation to the older adults whose lives have helped shape us and whose achievements and sacrifices have enriched our communities.
